Get Ready for a Post-COVID Summer
Summer’s coming, and it’s sure to be more fun than the last one! Making sure you’re fully BASSET certified couldn’t be more important than now, as things start heating back up (both figuratively and literally). If you’re a manager or employer, now is the time to confirm that all your employees’ BASSET cards are up-to-date, before the fun-loving summer customers start streaming into your establishment.

Remember Your Standard Measurements
While a seasoned bartender knows this like the back of their hand, every server or seller needs a good awareness of how much alcohol is in each drink. That, in addition to how many drinks are being served, is what can help servers and sellers know when another one would be one too many.
- Beer – 12 oz.
- Wine – 5 oz.
- 80-proof liquor – 1.5 oz.
- 100-proof liquor – 1 oz.
Don’t Forget the Food!
Food is a great way to not only slow alcohol absorption in the blood stream, but also slow the actual rate at which you’re serving the alcohol. Offering a food item is always a great way to help customers fully enjoy their time at your establishment, but without drinking too much. To get the most bang for the slower-alcohol-absorption-buck, suggest higher protein and higher fat foods like wings or pizza, rather than sugary foods like desserts.
Always Watch for Signs of Intoxication
The most important reminder we could give is a reminder about the signs that someone has had too much. Our BASSET course will give you all the ins and outs you need on this, but as a quick refresher, some signs that mean you shouldn’t keep serving include:
- Slurred speech
- Aggression or belligerence
- Loss of mental faculties, like difficulty counting or answering questions
- Loss of physical faculties, like difficulty maintaining balance
- Flushed face
- Drowsiness
Have a Ride Plan
If a customer’s drinking has crossed the line, your number one priority is the safety of them and others their behavior may impact. Every establishment should have a plan for helping customers get home safely when needed. It could be a ride service discount, or some other method, but every employee should be aware of how to utilize it.
